RJ’s Family Restaurant Review

by Kent Houston

Lake of the Ozarks RjsOur family decided to go out for breakfast while waiting for the weather to warm up for the days activities .  We always wanted to try RJ’s in the heart of Camdenton.  It always seemed packed which is always a good sign.

We arrived around 9:30am and, as expected, the parking lot was almost full.  I can’t stand waiting for breakfast, so I was hoping that would not be the case.  We were pleasantly surprised to see a few empty tables, and even a booth which is perfect for our kids.  RJ’s has that local family friendly feel, and it seemed like many of the customers knew each other.   The restaurant was clean and was not smoky at all.  I’m not sure if there was a smoking section, but I didn’t notice if there was.  The tables tops were made of old Lakelake of the ozarks RJs of the Ozarks and Camdenton Ads.  We enjoyed looking through all these with the kids.

We were greeted promptly by our waitress and she offered coffee while we looked over the menu.  The coffee was above average, but I was disappointed to find only the little cup creamers. When we go out for breakfast I like fresh cream on the table..  The breakfast menu was impressive and included pancakes, french toast, omelets, and breakfast sandwiches.

The kids and wife quickly decided on French toast and Pancakes.

Both portions were huge, especially the pancakes.  The thick cut french toast was “toasted” perfectly and dusted with powdered sugar.  Warm maple syrup was brought by our waitress and the kids dug in.  The French toast had hints of cinnamon and was excellent.  My youngest made short work of his smaller 2 slice portion($3.00) and this is a child who rarely clears his plate (I may have helped a little).   My wife order the normal 3 slice portion ($4.50) show above (halved) and added 2 eggs and sausage for and extra $3.50 to share.

My oldest son ordered the short stack which came with two huge thick pancakes.  He normally finishes his meal but not on this occasion.  Even with a bit of help from Mom and Dad there were some left over.  They were light and melted in your mouth.

I decided on the Denver 3 egg omelet ($6.75) which was stuffed with ham, green peppers, onions, and cheese.

The veggies where a crisp tender, but a tad heavy on the onions.  I enjoy biscuits and gravy and hash browns, but usually have to order a la cart at most places.  RJ’s offers both.   The biscuits and gravy were loaded with sausage and had just the right amount of kick.  The hash-browns were crispy but not burnt and were excellent with the gravy.

After we could not eat anymore we were given our check, which was very reasonable for the amount of food we ordered.  We waited patiently for the waitress to come back to get our credit card, but she never came back.  After some time had passed we finally realized that you pay up front at the counter.  Our mistake, but the waitress could have mentioned it.  I guess we looked like regulars.

RJ’s breakfast was exactly what our family was looking for.  The comfortable family friendly surroundings made our meal enjoyable and relaxing.  The amount of food you get for the money makes it that much better.  RJ’s in Camdenton is Lake of the Ozarks breakfast at its best.
